Kirami Original Woody Medium

The hot tub is heated with an efficient black Cube heater with a timeless design and colour; it heats even large tubs quickly. It is made out of high-quality marine-grade aluminium. The heat-treated pine used in the outer shell is a Finnish alternative for dark-coloured imported wood. ThermoWood is a high-quality, long-lasting material with a warm brown colour that maintains its shape well.

The barrel diameter is 170 cm and water volume 1860 litres. It is suitable for 4-6 people. The dry weight of the hot tub is 209 kg. The gross heat output of the CUBE stove is 48 kW and the net heat output transferred to the water is 35 kW.

Features of the hot tub

The basic Kirami hot tub package always includes a heater, a chimney, a heat shield, a chimney cap and a thermometer. The customer picks the hot tub model and the available interior and exterior colours. Many of the hot tubs have heater options of different sizes available.

Cross section and insulation of the Kirami plastic tub

The plastic tubs are made out of durable polyethylene that requires no maintenance. The plastic can withstand heat up to + 130 °C and cold down to – 50 °C. It is food grade and recyclable.

The hot tub heaters are only designed for the natural water flow; their circulation is free, which means that no additional pumps or electricity is needed. The temperature of the heater is the same as the water temperature.

Q: What kind of a surface must the hot tub be placed on?

A: Choose a flat surface that can withstand the full weight of the tub. The surface can be evened out with stone chippings with a roughness from 6-16 mm, for example. If you want to have a more solid foundation, you can cast one from concrete or use ready-made slabs. It is also recommended to keep the surrounding area of the tub free of vegetation.

You should place drains on the foundation of a wooden tub in order to keep the bottom of the tub sufficiently dry and prevent rot.

Q: How soon (after the delivery) can I use my hot tub?

A: When placed on a ready-made foundation, the installation of the tub takes around one hour. The hot tub is delivered assembled with the heater detached. To start using the tub, you only need to install the heater, the chimney and the outlet valve. Please read the instructions for use carefully before using the tub for the first time. Note that filling and heating the tub take their time as well.

Q: Can the hot tub be embedded into a terrace?

A: Yes it can, provided that the heater is placed outside the terrace in a fire-safe area. Be sure to also take water drainage into account when considering the placement.

Hot Tub preparation – How to prepare the hot tub installation

Heating

Q: What kind of wood should I use?

A: The best and most cost-efficient type of wood is dry, chopped birch (Nordic countries). When burning hardwood, always use a separate ash box made of stainless steel. Of course, other wood species and types can be used as well. Generally speaking, the higher the density of the wood, the better the heating value, and the most essential factor is the dryness of the firewood.

Q: How much wood do I need for heating the hot tub?

A: Depending on the time of year, heating the hot tub takes 60–120 litres of dry birch firewood (Nordic countries).

The amount of firewood needed varies depending on factors such as the starting temperature of the water, the moisture content and quality of the wood, and the outside temperature. Below are estimates of how many loads of firewood each heater model consumes.

Cult: approx. 7–10 loads

Macu: approx. 6–9 loads

Cube: approx. 5–8 loads

Tube: approx. 4–7 loads

Q: What should I take into account when heating the hot tub?

A: First of all, make sure that there is water in the tub! Even if you have heated the tub the night before, check the state of the tub anyway. If you want to heat the water as quickly as possible, use dry and high-quality firewood. Using a tub cover shortens the heating time significantly. Empty the heater of ashes before heating, including the top of the grates. Maintain a large fire and add firewood once every 10–15 minutes to make sure that the fire does not go out in the middle of the heating process. The water is circulated by the force of gravity, meaning that if the fire goes out, the circulation slows down and it takes time to restart the fire and restore the circulation.

Kirami Mixing paddle is used for mixing the water at the heating stage, to even out the layered temperature.

Q: How is the water heated?

A: The bathwater is heated with a wood-burning heater supplied with the hot tub, so no electricity is needed. When heated, the heater must be full of water, meaning that the water level of the tub must be above the upper lead-through. When heated, the water becomes lighter in weight, whereby it rises to the upper part of the heater and is transferred into the tub through the circulation pipe. Cold water in the tub descends to the bottom and is transferred into the heater through the lower circulation pipe.

Q: How quickly can the bathwater be heated?

A: The heating rate of the bathwater depends on the power of the heater, the size of the tub, the quality of the firewood, the air temperature and whether or not you use a tub cover. For example, in a 0 °C temperature, a 1,450-litre tub will take approximately 2–3 hours to heat.For heating, we recommend using dry wood chopped into small pieces. Using large and moist firewood may even double the heating time.

Water

Q: Can I use lake or sea water in the tub?

A: Yes you can, as the heater is made of marine aluminium. The heaters are protected with galvanic anodes similarly to sea boats and outboard motors. Galvanic anodes protect the heater from corrosion if seawater or maintenance chemicals are used in the tub (In Kirami’s newest heaters, this is implemented with a magnesiumanode rod). There is no need to even rinse the heater with freshwater after use. All of our hot tubs can be used with sea and lake water. However, we recommend paying special attention to water hygiene when using sea or lake water. If you have any suspicions regarding the cleanliness of the water, you should change the water and clean the hot tub. You should change the water in the tub after each use.

Q: How often should I change the bathwater?

A: We recommend changing the bathwater after one or two days in normal family use. With correct filter and chemical use, the water can stay usable for bathing for 1–3 months. You should always use a sanitising chemical if you bathe in the water more than once.

Q: How can I extend the useful life of the bathwater?

A: You can extend the useful life of the water significantly by using a filter and pool chemicals. Read more about water hygiene on the product pages.

Q: Can I use products such as bath fragrances in the hot tub?

A: You can use bath fragrances and salts in the hot tub, provided that the pH value of the water remains at 7.2–7.6 and you follow the dosage instructions. After using such products, we recommend thoroughly rinsing the inside of the heater.

Q: How can I drain the hot tub of water?

A: The hot tub features an outlet from which the water is drained through a discharge pipe. Place the hot tub so that draining the water does not cause any problems. If necessary, use a hose to guide the water further away.

Q: Can I release bathwater into the garden?

A: Generally yes, provided that the chemicals used and local regulations are taken into account.

Q: Why does the water smell musty when I remove the tub cover after heating?

A: When you cover the tub and the water does not get any oxygen while being heated, it may develop a slightly musty odour. If you remove the cover 5 minutes before using the tub, the water will have time to breathe and the odour will dissipate.

Winter

Q: How long can I keep water in the hot tub in winter?

A: Never leave water unsupervised/unheated in the tub in freezing temperatures, as the heater and the pipes can freeze very easily. In extremely freezing temperatures, the water can stay unfrozen in the heater and the pipes for a few hours if a tub cover is used. We recommend draining the tub after use in freezing temperatures. Just make sure that the fire and embers have gone out in the heater.

Q: The hot tub has frozen over. What should I do?

A: If the outlet hose/valve is frozen, you can drain the tub by detaching the heater, enabling you to drain the water through the lower lead-through of the heater. If the heater is frozen, you can try thawing it with a fan heater, for example. If that does not help, you can detach the heater and take it inside to thaw. Never, under any circumstances, light a fire in the heater if you suspect that it is frozen.

Q: How should I store the hot tub when it is not being used, e.g. during winter?

A: You should wash, rinse and dry the tub carefully and make sure that no water is left in the tub/outlet pipe. You should leave the outlet valves of the tub open for the winter: in rubber-plugged models, the rubber plug should be removed completely, and if the tub has a ball valve, the valve should be opened halfway. This way, any water left in the tub can be drained and the valves will not freeze and break. You should also remove the filter for the winter and either completely dry it or store it in a warm place. Store the tub covered.

The heater and the piping will be emptied sufficiently through the outlet valve if the tub has been installed correctly. If there is an extension pipe set installed between the tub and the heater, please pay attention that the heater is emptied.

Q: Can I use the hot tub in winter?

A: You can use your hot tub normally in winter, provided that you take proper care of heating and remember to drain the tub after use. Please keep in mind that water splashes around the tub create a slipping hazard.
